Rachel Platten (2) - Week of July 30, 2015

I'm back! But first, a history lesson.

Curlin's Top 45 was named after the superstar horse Curlin. His first win came at Gulfstream Park in Florida in February of 2007, before winning his next two races (both major wins) at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas. After that, he was set for the 2007 Kentucky Derby, but he could only muster a third place finish behind Street Sense and Hard Spun, both of whom would go on to become successful stallions. After the Derby, he recorded a dramatic victory in the Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore over the aforementioned Street Sense. Then he went to Belmont Park for the last leg of the Triple Crown, only to lose to a filly (female horse) by a head, the very same margin he won the Preakness by. But he wasn't done yet! After the Triple Crown, he went on to run third in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, behind a horse named Any Given Saturday (also a successful stallion after he was retired) and the aforementioned Hard Spun. He then went back to Belmont, this time to capture the Jockey Club Gold Cup. With that win, he was eligible for the Breeders' Cup Classic, which in 2007 was held at Monmouth. He would return to the Jersey Shore victorious, winning the USA's richest horse race, then would be named the 2007 Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. You'd think he would be retired after then, right? WRONG! He was back for his four-year-old campaign, this time racing all the way in Dubai in the UAE. He won two straight races there, including the world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup. Nearly three months later, he raced for the first time since Dubai, winning the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. Then he made his THIRD trip to Belmont, this time for his first ever start on the turf, placing second in the Man O' War Stakes. After that, he made the (rather short) trip up to Saratoga Race Course, winning the Woodward Stakes. Then he made his FOURTH trip to Belmont, this time winning his SECOND STRAIGHT Jockey Club Gold Cup. The 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita would be his next and final stop, where he placed fourth. He was then named Horse of the Year once again, and he also won Champion Older Horse. Presently, he stands as a stallion at Lane's End Farm on Versailles, Kentucky, just outside of Lexington. His children are doing fantastic on the racetrack, just like their father.
